Curiosity/Macabre : Silver money clip made from a Maria Theresa Silver Thaler coin. A novelty money clip made from an Austrian Holy Roman Empire silver thaler coin which has been cut in half. One side features the front side of a coin with a portrait of Queen Maria Theresia of Habsburg embossed around the outside border "M. THERESIA. D. G. R. IMP HU REG. S. F." which represents the legend "Maria Theresia, Dei Gratia, Romanorum Imperatrix, Hungariae Bohemiaeque Regina". The reverse of the money clip features the back side of the coin decorated with an Imperial double-headed eagle with the cost of arms of Austria in the center with shield representing Hungry, Bohemia, Burgundy and Burgau. Coin is embossed "ARCHID. AVST. DUX. BURG. CO TYR. 1780.X" around the outside border which represents "Archidux Austriae, Dux Burgundiae, Comes Tyrolis". The money clip has a tight hinge that works properly and will hold paper money in place. The Maria Theresa Thaler coin was originally struck in Austria between 1740 and 1780 and was an important trade coins used in Europe and throughout the world at that time as it was actual circulating currency of the Holy Roman Empire and it’s dominions. This coin has continued to be produced in various mints throughout the world and it is always dated 1780 as that was the year of the Queen's death. The actual age of this particular coin is unknown. The silver mount which holds the two halves of the coin and forms the hinge of the money clip is marked .800.
