Edward Bawden (1903-1989), lithograph on paper, The Battle of Qadisiya, 17.5vm x 43cm, from The Arabs, printed by The Curwen Press in 1947, mounted, glazed and framed. Bawden wrote of it - “I work upon the lithographs for a few hours every day, but because of the fine detail I find the work rather a strain on the eyes. In all I have finished one-fifth of the drawings but these include some of the most elaborate ones such as the two double spreads.” This is the second of those double spreads. Sadly, the work was never reprinted, as it included a pictorial depiction of Mohammed which led to widespread protests in the Arab world
