2 mid 19th century Indian Jutti or slippers, both with gilt and silver thread embroidery, from estate of Edward Green Balfour (1813-1889) author of Encyclopaedia of India and Southern Asia, published Madras 1857 and 2 Hats
Good original condition, no restoration, some wear to thread.
Provenance: Held in family by descent. Edward Green Balfour was a surgeon and naturalist in India. In 1834 he travelled in India as an Assistant Surgeon in the Madras Medical School and became Surgeon-General in the presidency. He wrote on subjects including Indian languages, literature, forestry and medicine. Also noted for his pioneering ecological writings, which explored his belief in the "direct relationship between deforestation, climate change and environmental degradation"
