WWI Archive Glass Slides of Geography & Terrain Norway c1925. A collection belonging to Dougall H Bird, Soldier & Explorer comprising of a set of approximately 100 Glass slides in their original boxes, each annotated and initialled by Bird showing Norwegian Terrain and Genre circa 1925, Personal effects include postcards to sweetheart, academic qualifications, certificates, photo-postcards of Military service and family life, references, ledgers national registration documents dated 1915 and other original documents all contained in a suitcase belonging to Bird. After the first world war Dougall Bird carried out an extensive exploration of Norway visiting Fjords, lakes and villages in the middle twenties. Bird through his knowledge of the geography and terrain of Norway supported British Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the early part of the second world war following the German invasion of Norway (April 1940) in supporting sabotage operations by British and Norwegian
forces to disrupt German operations*.
*British forces launched a serious of operations in collaboration with Norwegian resistance codenamed Grouse, Freshman and Gunnerside in knocking out the Hydro-electric plant at Vemork to thwart the Nazi plan to obtain ‘heavy water’ requirement in the early stages for manufacturing a Hydrogen bomb.
After death archive passed down through the family by descent.
