Natural History : Scrimshaw Whale Tooth, 19th century.
A large polished sperm whale tooth with carved engravings to either side. One side with inscription “Capture of the British frigate Guerrière (mispelt) by the US frigate Constitution 1812” and depiction of the scene (note the plumes of smoke and broken masts in the water). The other side of the tooth with inscription “Prince de Neufchatel beating off and out-sailing a British frigate” and a depiction of the scene.
Excellent condition and patina throughout.
