Sir William Rothenstein (British 1872-1945), a sketch of Mrs Patrick Hamilton playing a violin, pencil on paper, signed 'WR 1922 for Miss Russell 1935' in pencil, page size 29cm x 40cm, unframed. Born Bradford 1845, Rothenstein became a key and influential figure in British art and society in the first half of the 20th Century. A master draughtsman, who was also a war artist in both World Wars & became principle at the Royal College of Art 1920 to 1935. He influenced many prominent artists including, Edward Burra, Henry Moore, Evelyn Dunbar, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and John Piper.
